Egypt has several international airports, most of them located in mainland Egypt at Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada and Aswan, one of them, at Sharm el-Sheikh, located on the Sinai peninsula.
Cairo International Airport (CAI) is the main gateway to Egypt and the biggest airport in the country. It is located about 24 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of the city.
Alexandria has two international airports, Alexandria Burg al Arab (HBE) and Alexandria al Nozha (ALY). Burg al Arab is farther outside Alexandria than Al Nozha, but with more modern facilities and a longer runway. Al Nozha has an remarkably short runway, and is mostly only used by EgyptAir. So unless you are a fan of exciting landings, you are better off flying to Cairo and taking the express train from Ramsis, this will be a more pleasant journey and takes only around 2½ hours.
Luxor International Airport (LXR) is mainly serviced by internal EgyptAir and international charter carriers. Two updated terminals serve international and domestic flights. Located in central Egypt, its is a convenient airport for all those wanting to visit the Nile Valley and the popular tourist destinations of the region. Flying time from Cairo is about an hour, making this an excellent alternative to the sometimes uncomfortable 12-hour train trip from Cairo.
Aswan al Daraw (ASW) is a small, but surprisingly new airport serviced by EgyptAir. Many flights from Cairo to Aswan requires a stopover in Luxor and a change of planes, which often takes 2-3 hours (which is more than the flying time), therefore make sure to check that the flight you want to book is a direct flight.
Hurghade (HRG) is a small, modern airport and effectively serves most of the holiday resorts along the Red Sea Riviera located on mainland Egypt. The airport is used by many different charter flights from all over Europe as well as a few scheduled international air carriers. If you arrive at Cairo International Airport and are heading for one of the holiday resorts, it is a much better and more comfortable option to go by EgyptAir to Hurghade compared to going by bus to your destination.
Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport (SHH) is the second largest in Egypt. It receives international direct flights from all over the world by major international airlines as well as charter flights, mainly from Europe. The airport serves primarily the holiday resorts on the Sinai Peninsula.
