Luxor is the site of the ancient city of Thebes, the capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom. Today Luxor has a population of around 400,000 and covers an area of 420 sq. km. Luxor has often been called the world's greatest open air museum and is the most important travel destination in southern Egypt and the Nile Valley. The ruins of the the biggest temple in Egypt: Karnak, and the Luxor temple, are both to be found within the city itself. On the west bank of the River Nile, immediately opposite the city, are monuments, temples and tombs, which includes the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens.

The development of the modern Luxor started when Howard Carter discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamen and all the publicity and interest that resulted from this find. Today thousands of international tourists arrive annually to Luxor to see the remains from the time when Thebes (Luxor) was the capital. As one might think, the city has all the facilities tourists expect, including a variety of hotels, bars, nightclubs and restaurants as well as bazaars where the usual variety of Egyptian souvenirs can be found.
