Mauritius is an island nation, and although it is located some 1,900 km. (1,200 mi.) south east off the coast of the African continent in the southwest Indian Ocean, Mauritius is officially part of Africa. The Island only covers a land area of 2,040 sq. km. (787 sq. mi.) and has a population of about 1.3 million. The biggest city and the capital is Port Louis with a population of around 150,000. In addition to the island Mauritius, the nation includes the islands of St. Brandon, Rodrigues and the Agalega Islands.

A visitor must be in possession of a valid passport and a return or onward ticket. Also visitors are required to provide accommodation details to emigration service on arrival. A visitor's visa is granted upon arrival, to almost all holders of a valid passport, with a very few exceptions.
