Mauritius is an island nation, and although it is located some 1,900 km. (1,200 mi.) south east off the coast of the African continent in the southwest Indian Ocean, Mauritius is officially part of Africa. The Island only covers a land area of 2,040 sq. km. (787 sq. mi.) and has a population of about 1.3 million. The biggest city and the capital is Port Louis with a population of around 150,000. In addition to the island Mauritius, the nation includes the islands of St. Brandon, Rodrigues and the Agalega Islands.

Mauritius is known for its beaches and natural beauty, and it is a popular tourist destination for people from around the world. Nearly 177 km. (110 mi.) of coastline, surrounded by coral reefs, account for turquoise lagoons and sandy beaches. The Northern Coastline offers breathtaking views. Grand Baie was the first area of the island to fully experience the tourist boom. It is a shopping and leisure paradise, where Mauritians also head for when they want a fun-filled night out. Péreybére, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Beaches are among the best places to swim in Mauritius, with it's endless sand, deep blue and clear waters.

The East Coast is known for its sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons. Flacq is one of the most important villages in Mauritius and has the country's largest open air market that attracts a large number of people. The Southern Coast provides dramatic contrasts of view. Blue Bay with its clear water and sandy beaches is also known for the diversity of its marine flora and fauna and is a perfect place for snorkeling. At Pointe dÉsny you can watch monstrous waves crashing against rugged cliffs. The West Coast offers a combination of mountain and sea sceneries.

Mauritius is renowned for it's luxury hotels, each offering a unique and unforgettable experience for their guests. The coastal ones usually give direct access to beaches and also offer water sports facilities. Hiring a self catering bungalow, villa or apartment in any part of the island is possible, for those who want to be on their own and spend a tranquil holiday. Restaurants and catering services are available throughout the island, and the Mauritian cuisine is known to be excellent. 
 
 
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is the major gateway for travelers coming from abroad. There are several international international airlines to choose from, flying directly from Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia to Mauritius. A visitor must be in possession of a valid passport and a return or onward ticket. Also visitors are required to provide accommodation details to emigration service on arrival. A visitor's visa is granted upon arrival, to almost all holders of a valid passport, with a very few exceptions.
