Algeria is the largest country of the Mediterranean Sea, the second largest on the African continent and the eleventh largest country in the world in terms of area. Algeria is bordered to the west by Morocco and Western Sahara, to the east by Tunesia and Libya, to the south by Mauritania, Mali and Niger, and to the north by the Mediterranean Sea. The total population is around 34 million people, The Sahara region, which is 85% of the country, is almost completely uninhabited. Most of the coastal area is hilly, sometimes even mountainous, and there only are a few natural harbours.

Algeria Holidays

Algiers is the capital and the largest city of Algeria, with a population of around 2.2 million in the urban area and 3.5 million for the metropolitan area. The second largest city is Maghreb. Among popular tourist attractions in Algiers are the Casbah and the Great Mosque.

Algeria shares with Morocco and Tunesia a Mediterranean coastline with great potential as a tourist attraction. Its tourism industry, however, has always lagged behind that of its closest neighbors, mainly because of the government's lack of interest to promote tourism and the lack of well run hotels and tourist sites. There are though some really good beaches along the Mediterranean coast with cities or towns that often offers a fairly vibrant nightlife. Atlas Mountains resorts and tours of the Sahara Desert are also pupular among tourists. Algeria cannot be considered safe in the desert regions. Especially in the desert regions of the south tourists are strongly advised to travel with a reputable tourist agency, and it is compulsory for self-drive tourists to be accompanied by an Algerian guide.
