Eritrea is located in the Horn of Africa, and is bordered on the northeast and east by the Red Sea, directly across from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands in the red Sea are part of Eritrea. In the west it is bordered by Sudan, in the south by Ethiopia and in the southeast by Djibouti. The total area is 117,600 sq. km. (45,400 sq. mi.). The country is virtually bisected by the Great Rift Valley, one of the worlds longest mountain ranges, with fertile lands to the west, descending to desert in the east. The total population of Eritrea is about 4.4 million people.
Eritrea was merged into Ethiopia in 1952 after the British had expelled the Italians in 1941. 10 years later Eritrea was fully incorporated into Ethiopia, but gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1993, although there still are armed disputes over some areas along the Ethiopian border.
The main cities of Eritrea are the capital, Asmara and the port town of Asseb in the southeast, as well as the towns of Massawa to the east, and Keren to the north. Asmara is located in the highlands and the most obvious influences in the capital are those of Italy, where you will find small cafes serving beverages common to Italy, and the cuisine cuisine reflects the period of Italien rule. Asmare is considered one of the safest capitals in Africa.
Since Eritrea won its independence it is now rapidly developing a tourist industry, although there still is a long way to go. Eritrea's coast offers some of the best diving in the world, but also some of the most limited diving and tourist facilities, all of which are based in the port city of Massawa. The beaches in and immediately surrounding Massawa as well as to the north are of modest to poor quality. The beaches on the Dahlak Islands on the other hand are clean, white and pristine, with lagoons of clear turquoise water. The only way to get to the Dahlak Islands is to charter a boat from a licensed company in Massawa. The Dahlak Archipelago extends far and offers some great attractions. Eritrea also has a fine selection of native wildlife including Elephants, lions, barboons, gazelles, leopards and ostriches.
Eritrea's only international airport is in the capital Asmara. there are frequent scheduled international flights to and from Frankfurt, Dubai, Jeddah, Rome, Cairo and other cities. Only nationals of Uganda and Kenya can enter Eritrea without a visa. All others must apply for a visa before entering the country.
