Burundi is a small, densely populated central African nation, bordering Lake Tanganyika, Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Due to almost 15 years of civil wars, Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world. The total land area of Burundi is 27,830 sq. km. (10,745 sq. mi.). The total population is around 8.7 million, the capital city is Bujumbaru with a population of around 400,000.

Burundi is in the heart of Africa and has wonderful landscapes, from mountaintops to forests, huge lakes to tropical plateau. However, settlement by rural populations has let to deforestation, soil erosion and habitat loss. Deforestation of the entire country is almost completely due to overpopulation. There are two national parks, Kibira National Park to the northwest, adjacent to Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda, and Rurubu National Park to the northeast. Both were established in 1982 to conserve wildlife populations.

The city center of Bujumbura is a colonial town with a large market, a large mosque, a cathedral and the national stadium. Other attractions include three museums. Around 10 km (6 miles) south of Bujumbura is a stone that marks the place Stanley and Livingstone visited after their first historic meeting at Ujiji in Tanzania.in 1871. Bujumbaru is located by Lake Tanganyika, and has a port. Cargo/passenger ferries on Lake Tanganyika connects Bujumbura with Kigoma (Tanzania) and Mpulungu (Zambia), sometimes there are also ferries to Kalemi (Congo Dem. Rep.).

Almost all the hotels in the country are situated in Bujumbura, although there are a few in Gitega, Kirundo, Muyinga and Ngozi. Elsewhere in the country there is virtually no accommodation for visitors. Bujumbaru International Airport (BJM) is 11 kilometers (7 miles) north of the city. The national airline is Air Burundi. Other airlines serving Burundi include Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways and KLM.

A hot equatorial climate is found near Lake Tanganyika. It is often windy on the lake. The rest of the country is mild and pleasant. Burundi has two rainy seasons, the major one from Febraury to May, with a minor rainy season between September and November. The rest of the year are the dry seasons.
