Mozambique is on the Indian Ocean coast of Southern Africa. It is bordered by South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. The 2,500 km (1,500 miles) of coastline by the Indian Ocean is scattered with endless coral reefs, tropical beaches and strings of pristine islands, and is a mecca for scuba and snorkel divers as well as sun worshipers. The idyllic Bazaruto archipelago, off the coast of Inhambane province, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, consisting of four main islands that make up one of the most beautiful places on the continent.
Mozambique covers an area of 801,590 sq. km. (309,496 sq. mi.) and has a population of about 21.5 million. The capital and largest city is Maputo, a port on the Indian Ocean. It has an official population of around 1.3 million, but the actual population is estimated to be much higher because of slums and other unofficial settlements. Maputo is also known as the "Little Rio" of Africa, not only because of its Portuguese style colonial architecture, but also because of its tropical lifestyle and pulsating nightlife that offers numerous world class hotels and restaurants.
Tourists do not only visit Mozambique because of the beaches, the coral reefs, the fishing, diving and the islands, but also to go on a wildlife safari in one of 6 national parks and 6 national reserves, famous for the vast numbers of wildlife. Most of the wildlife reserves are located in the central and southern parts of the country, with the exception of the important Niassa Reserve on the Tanzania border. The Maputo Elephant Reserve is very popular among tourists, not only because of it's closeness to the capital, but also because of its coastline and unique plant and animal life. To the south the Hluhluwe National Park has now been intergrated with the Kruger National Park in South Africa, and together with a large area in Zimbabwe, forming Transfrontier Peace Park, where animals have a very big area to move around.
Maputo International airport is the main airport of Mozambique. There are several daily flights from Johannesburg to Maputo. Most international flights arrive from South Africa, although direct international flights also exist between Mosambique and Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya and Portugal. There are also several flights during the week from Johannesburg, Dar Es Salam, and Nairobi to Pemba in the north. Most nationalities need a visa, and while there are rumors that some borders and airports may issue them on arrival, don't count on it and obtain a visa before arrival. Multiple entry visas are also available.
Mozambique has a tropical climate with two seasons, a wet season from October to March and a dry season from April to September. Climatic conditions, however, vary depending on altitude. Rainfall is heavy along the coast and decreases in the north and south. Cyclones are also common during the wet season.
