Malawi, formerly known as Nyasaland, is a landlocked country in the northern part of Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique, Tanzana and Zambia. Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa, runs along most of its eastern border. The total land area is 118,484 sq. km. (45,747 sq. mi.) and i has a population of around 14 million, making it one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. Linongwe is the political capital of the country, and the largest city with a population of around 900,000. Blantyre, with a population of estimated about 750,000, is the economical capital of the country. Malawi is among the world's least developed countries.

Malawi is a land of diverse landscapes with rolling hills, high plateaus, forest and farmlands, game parks and spectacular mountain ranges including Mount Mulanje, central Africa's highest peak. Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa, takes up a full fifth of the country. This inviting lake, with a total surface area of approximately 29,600 sq. km., is the third largest lake in Africa and the ninth largest in the world. It is also the second deepest lake in Africa, and it stretches away like an inland tropical sea filled with clear, warm water, dotted with rocky islands. Lake Malawi has more fish species than any other lake on earth, and it is probably Malawi's biggest attraction. Tourists often go to Malawi for a beach holiday at the golden sand beaches along Lake Malawi.

Malawi also has nine wildlife reserves that offers true unspoiled wilderness and lots of animals like lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, antelope and rhino. Among the national parks the tourist industry promotes are Nyika National Park, Kasungu National Park and Liwonde National Park. Another important national park is Dzalanyama Forest Reserve, about 40 kilometers south of Lilongwe.

Chileka International Airport serves Blantyre with flights to and from South Africa and other African countries. Air Malawi also has flights to and from London Gatwick and Dubai.  Malawi's largest international airport is in Lilongwe. Most travelers connect via Johannesburg in South Africa or Nairobi in Kenya. To enter Malawi, a full valid passport is required. For tourist visits, visas are not required by citizens of most Commonwealth countries, The USA, most European countries and certain other countries. For vise requirements you should check with your nearest Malawi embassy or consulate.

Western-standard hotels can be found in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu. There are also some 5 star resort hotels in some rural areas. Club Makokola is perhaps the most luxurious hotel/resort in the country, on the shores of Lake Malawi north of Mangochi.

Malawi's climate is hot in the low-lying areas in the south of the country and temperate in the northern highlands. Between November and April the temperature is warm with equatorial rains and thunderstorms, with the storm reaching their peak severity in late March. There is almost no rainfall from May to September. The hottest region is on the shores of Lake Malawi, but there is mostly a cooling breeze.
