Zambia is a country located in the northern part of Southern Africa. It is a landlocked country that borders with eight other African countries. The total area is 752,618 sq. k. (290,587 sq. mi.), and the total population around 11.7 million. Zambia is one of the most highly urbanized countries in sub-Saharan Africa with almost 50% of the population concentrated in a few urban areas along the major transport corridors. The rural areas are sparsely populated. Unemployment and poverty are serious problems in the urban areas. The largest city, and the capital is Lusaka located in the southern part of the central plateau of the country. It has a population of around 1.2 million and is growing fast.

It is estimated that Zambia holds 6% of the worlds copper reserves, and Zambia's economy has traditionally been, and to a certain extent still is, dominated by the copper mining industry. In recent years tourism has been a fast growing industry in Zambia, to some extend driven by the misfortunes of its neighbor Zimbabwe, which has made tourist go the the northern side of the Victoria Falls and Zambia's safaris.

Approximately 30% of Zambia's total area is occupied by game parks and game reserves. In all there are 19 national parks and 34 game reserves of which some are privately owned, while the majority are state controlled. Kafue National Park is one of the largest in the world. The South Luangwa National Park concentrated around the river Luangwa is one of the most successful game reserves in Zambia with an exceptional high number of wildlife, sadly the Rhinos have been hunted to extinction in this region. Zambia is also home to the Victoria Falls National Park, locally known as the Mosi-Oa-Tunva National Park.

Zambia has some of Africa's largest water resources, which not only contributes to rich grass land and the wide range of wildlife it supports, but also in itself attracts tourists. The magnificent Victoria Falls originates in Zambia, and there are 17 other cascading waterfalls, among these the Kalambo Falls, one of the deepest falls in the world, and the Ngnye Falls. The Zambezi River is the fourth larges river in Africa, and there are quite a few other rivers, like the Luangwa River, where you can go water rafting, canoeing or river fishing. Zambia also has many large lakes, and borders the Lake Tanganyika, the second largest lake of freshwater in the world and one of the major tourist attractions in Zambia.

Zambia's main international gateway is Lusaka International Airport, which has direct flights to London and good regional connections. Also Livingstone Airport, near the Victoria Falls, and Mfuwe Airport, near the South Luangwa National Park, have small international airports serving regional destinations. To enter Zambia, most visitors need a visa.  Western visitors get their visa on arrival, but figuring out how much you have to pay for the visa sometimes courses a problem. You have to pay for the visa in cash on arrival at the immigration kiosks.

Although Zambia lies in the tropics, the general height of the plateau ensures that the climate seldom is unpleasantly hot, except in the valleys. There are three seasons: the cool, dry winter season from May to August, the hot, dry season from September to November, and the wet season from December to April. The cool, dry winter season is probably the best time of year to visit Zambia.
