Botswana is dominated by the Kalahari Desert, which covers up to 70% of the land surface of the country. The Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta, is in the northwest. The Makgadikgadi Pan, a large salt pan lies to the north. Botswana is bordering Namibia, South Africa , Zimbabwe and Zambia. The total area is about 600,000 sq. km. (224,000 sq. mi.) and extends 1,100 km. from north to south and 960 km. from east to west, making it about the same size as Kenya or France and a little smaller than Texas. The total population of Botswana is only around 1.7 million. The largest city, and the capital, is Gaborone with a population of just over 200,000.

Botswana is one of the few remaining destinations in Africa that still provides a good sense of the adventure of safari. Its expansive parks and preserves are still largely undeveloped and untamed, and the wildlife is as diverse and abundant as that found anywhere else. Among the most famous areas for wildlife safaris in Botswana are: The Okavango Delta, a unique geological formation where a delta is formed by the Okavango River, flowing into the Kalahari desert instead of the ocean. Part of the delta is designated as Moremi National Park. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve found in the Kalahari Desert region, an area only sparsely inhabited by humans, but one of the richest wildlife regions in all of Africa. Chobe National Park, a beautiful grassland reserve that has gained international fame for its abundant elephant population. Chobe National Park is a good point from which to move on to Victoria Falls.

Botswana's main airport is Sir Seretse Khama in Gaborone. Most flights arriving in Botswana are from Johannesburg in South Africa. The airport at Maun can also be reached from Johannesburg or Cape Town. Maun is very much a tourist attraction spot. For most nationals the only entry/exit requirements is a passport with at least six months of validity remaining. For further information of entry requirements, travelers a recommended to contact the nearest Botswana Embassy or Consulate.

Botswana offers the traveler a choice of accommodation options from top class hotels, luxury lodges and safari camps, to budget guesthouses and camping grounds. A variety of cuisines are served in hotels and restaurants from local favorites and game meat to continental and Asian dishes.

The summer season begins in November and ends in March. It usually brings very high temperatures. However, summer is also the rainy season, and cloud coverage and rain can cool things down. The winter season begins in May and ends in August. This is also the dry season when virtually no rainfall occurs. Winterdays are sunny and cool to warm; however evening and night temperatures can drop below freezing point in some areas. The in-between periods still tend to be dry, but days are cooler than in summer and the nights warmer than in winter.
