Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, is a landlocked country surrounded by South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mosambique. Although the country is landlocked, its great rivers are used for transport. The total area of Zimbabwe is 390,757 sq. km. (150,871 sq. mi.), and the population around 13.4 million. The biggest city, and the capital is Harare, with a population of about 1.6 million. Since the Land Reform program in 2000, tourism in Zimbabwe has steadily declined, and thousand of jobs have been lost in the industry. Several airlines have also pulled out of Zimbabwe, and Air Zimbabwe is today the only airline that fly directly to Europe, with London as the only European destination.

Furthermore there is a great variety of wildlife, eight main national parks and the Victoria Falls, regarded as one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. The Victoria Falls is around 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles) wide and drops between 90 m. and 107 m. into the Zambezi Gorge. The Great Zimbabwe National Monument is the greatest medieval city in sub-Saharan Africa, and provides evidence that ancient Africa reached a level of civilisation not suspected by early scholars.
The Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest national park covering an area of over 14,500 sq. km., located on the west, bordering with Botswana. The park holds one of the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa. The Gonarezhou National Park covers an area of 5,000 sq. km.. It is lying in the south eastern part of the country and now forms part of the Transfrontier Peace Park, together with the Kruger National Park in South Africa and the Hluhluwe National Park in Mosambique.
Given the political and economic instability in the country, travellers to Zimbabwe should take care with their personal security and safety. However, on the whole the country remains relatively safe for foreign visitors, and you are likely to find it very welcoming. Most visitors require a visa to enter Zimbabwe. Many visitors requiring a visa can obtain it on arrival. To make sure, you are strongly advised to check entry requirements with your local consulate or embassy.
The Zimbabwe Dollars are today worthless, and you are not allowed to bring Zimbabwe Dollars into the country. Major credit cards are widely accepted but will incur high charges. Travellers cheques are best taken in US Dollars or Pound Sterling. Most hotel accommodation must be paid for in foreign currency. It is advisable to bring a small amount of cash US Dollar or Pound Sterling in smaller bills. If paying in foreign currency be sure to have small bills available as change will be given in worthless Zimbabwe Dollars.
