The Gambia, commonly known as just Gambia, is a very small country along the banks of Gambia River. In the west, it has a small coast on the Atlantic Ocean. The total land area is just 10,380 sq. km. (4,007 sq.mi.) making it the smallest country in Africa. The total population is around 1.7 million. The capital city is Banjul, located on St Mary's Island, where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. The population is 35,000, and it cannot grow any further because it is on an island. The biggest city in Gambia is Serrekunda, located southwest of Banjul. The total population of Serrekunda is around 340,000.
Around 100,000 tourists visit Gambia annually, most visitors are from Europe, with nearly half being British, 11% Dutch and 5% Swedish. Citizens of Commonwealth, citizens of countries that are full member of the European Union and citizens from the Economic Community of West African states do not need a visa for travel to Gambia, but citizens of most other countries should apply at the nearest consulate or mission.
The general climate for Gambia is tropical. During the period from June to November it is very hot, and sometimes with heavy rain. From November until May the temperatures are cooler, and it is part of the dry season.
