Nigeria is located on the Atlantic coast in the Golf of Guinea, and has a total area of 923,768 sq. km (356,669 sq. mi.). Nigeria has a coastline of at more than 850 km. (530 mi.) and a very varied landscape from rainforest and savannah to dessert in the far north. With a population of more than 140 million, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. Abuja is the capital of Nigeria, it was mainly built in the 1980s and officially became Nigeria's capital in 1991, replacing the previous capital Lagos. Abuja is located in the center of Nigeria. The largest city in Nigeria, Lagos, has a population of around 8 million and is the second most populous city in Africa, after Cairo in Egypt. Lagos is a huge metropolis located in south-west Nigeria, on the Atlantic coast. The city is the economic and financial capital of Nigeria.

Nigeria offers a wide variety of tourist attractions, such as roomy rivers and ocean beaches, ideal for beach holidays and watersports, unique wildlife and vast areas of unspoiled nature, ranging from tropical forest with magnificent waterfalls to savannah grasslands. However, the lack of required modern infrastructural facilities means that many of these attractions are still not being enjoyed by tourists. Among the most popular beaches visited by tourists are Coconut Beach, Victoria BeachLekki and Eleko beaches, where you can find good hotels and resorts for foreign travelers. Nigeria wildlife offers a wide variety of wild animals and is a central attraction of the country. There are five national parks in Nigeria. Gashaka-Gumti National Park is the biggest national park in Nigeria and also where there is the highest variety and greatest number of wild animals. Cross River National Park is a rain forest, and therefore of special interest for many. The three other national parks are: The Kainji National Park, the Yankari National Park and the Oban Hills. Yankari National Park is the most popular destination for tourists in Nigeria.

There are international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt. Most inter-continental flights fly to the airport in Lagos that has flight connection to most major cities in the world. Apart from the international airports, there are many local airports and local air travel is widespread. Nigeria is a fairly dangerous destination. Crime levels are high, particularly in Lagos. The Niger delta area is unsafe for tourists, and the waters outside of Nigeria is one of the most likely places to be attacked by modern day pirates.

The Climate in Nigeria varies. There are three regions: the far south, the far north and the rest of the country. The far south can be defined as equatorial, or tropical rainforest climate, where annual rainfall is high; in the center the climate is tropical, with less rainfall, and in the north, the climate is almost desert-like, with little rainfall.
