South Africa has an excellent infrastructure of airports, with airports in all major cities. In total there are ten international airports in South Africa. The three main airports are OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, Cape Town International Airport and Durban International Airport.

OR Tambo International Airport is located in Kempton Park, about 20 km east of downtown Johannesburg. This airport is the major gateway to South Africa, offering international arrivals and departures, domestic flights and connections to the rest of Africa. More than 40 airlines are using the airport regularly, many of them connecting Johannesburg with direct flights to major cities in Europe. OR Tambo International Airport has been renamed twice in the last couple of years, and you may find people and publications still referring to it by it's previous names of Johannesburg International Airport or Jan Smuts. The airport is constantly expanding and you will probably find construction work in progress, the current big project is an additional International Terminal.

Cape Town international Airport, the second biggest in South Africa, is located around 20 km east from the city center of Cape Town. Many international flights are available direct to Cape Town International Airport. Durban International Airport has only a few direct international flights available. In addition there are many charter flight companies operating within South Africa offering flights for private trips, for game viewing and to the numerous safari and game lodges.

For domestic travel within South Africa, there are a number of airlines which offer flights between the main cities in South Africa, as well as routes to most of the smaller cities. Each of the airlines offer varying prices and special offers which largely depend on the day of the week and the time of day of the flight.
