The Drakensberg mountain range is situated along the southeast coast of South Africa. The spectacular Drakensberg mountains are a challenge for adventure seekers and a heaven for wildlife lovers. Extending from southwest to northeast for around 1,125 km (700 mi), the Drakensberg Range is the main watershed of South Africa. The highest peak is Thabana Ntlenyana at 3,482 meters (11,420 ft). The highest part of the range are bordering Lesotho. North of Lesotho the range becomes lower and less rugged until entering Mpumalanga where the mountains are more broken. The Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga is within the northern reaches of the Drakensberg, though its geology appears different. South Drakensberg mountains are home to the world's second-highest waterfall, the Tugela Falls, with a total drop of 947 meters.

Caves are frequent in the more easily eroded sandstone, and many have rock paintings by the Bushmen. The Drakensberg has between 35,000 and 40,000 works of bushman art. The paintings are difficult to date but antropopogical evidence suggests that the bushman civilization existed in the Drakensberg at least 40,000 years ago, and possibly over 100,000 years ago.

There are a multitude of activities to be pursued in this region, and tourism in the Drakensberg is rapidly developing, with a variety of hotels and resorts appearing on the slopes. Most of the higher parts of the range have been designated as game reserves or wilderness areas. The Drakensberg National Park, located in KwaZulu-Natal, near the border with Lesotho, was listed by UNESCO in 2000 as a World Heritage site. Adjacent to the Drakensberg National Park is Cathkin Estates Conservation and Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest privately owned game park in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg region.

The best time to visit any highland or mountain in Southern Africa is in the period between March and June when rains have passed over and spring like conditions of coolness and clarity prevails. And excellent time to view the local wild flowers is in late October/November.
