Hotels in Egypt In 2006 the Egyptian Hotel Association announced a new ranking system for hotels in Egypt. The old classification system that dates back to 1982 ranked hotels into five categories, one through five stars. Under the old rating system a lot of room was left for a subjective evaluation that might be influenced by the mood of an inspector. Under the new system, the one through five stars remains, but in order to receive their rating of stars, the hotel/resort/cruise ship must be able to present a range of facilities, making the rating much more objective. New hotels are subject to this new classification system, and their star classification will include the letters NN (new norms). Hotels already classified according to the old ranking system may not be affected in the near term, they can keep their old star rating. However older hotels may request a re-evaluation according to the new specifications, and thereby obtain a star classification including the letters NN. The old star rating was not very reliable and many travellers to Egypt found that hotels classified as 5 stars only were able to meet a standard of 4 or 3 stars compared with hotels at other destinations around the world. Very often travel agents have their own rating system for the hotels they provide, but it is not always that these unofficial ratings can be trusted.
It may therefore be time well spend to find out as much as you can about your intended accommodation in Egypt before you make the booking. You can ask if the hotel has been classified under the new and much more reliable system and what rating it has, you can visit the hotel's website to find out more about the facilities available, or you could simply concentrate your search to the well known international chains such as Grand Hyatt or Four Season, but this of course is most likely more expensive.
