Cairo is the capital of Egypt and one of the worlds largest urban areas, with a total population of over 16 million people. It is the largest city in Africa and the 13th largest city in the world. Cairo is famous for its own history preserved in the medieval Islamic city and in Old Cairo as well as for the ancient pharaonic history of Egypt. Close by the city is almost every Egypt pyramid, most famously the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, the only remaining monuments of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the country's most famous tourist attraction.  But there are also ancient temples, tombs, Christian churches, magnificent Muslim monuments and of course the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, home to the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world.

Cairo also offers an incredible selection of shopping, leisure and nightlife activities. Shopping ranges from the famous Khan el-Khalili bazaar, largely unchanged since the 14th century, to modern air-conditioned centers displaying the latest fashions. Try some of the famous street markets, like Wekala al-Balag for fabrics, including Egyption cotton, the Tentmakers Bazaar for appliqué-work, Mohammed Ali Street for musical instruments or the Camel Market just for the folklore.

Cairo has an enormous number of restaurants. Cheap food can be found everywhere in street restaurants and snack stalls. Top restaurants are often, but not always, found in hotels and on Nile boats. In general, downtown is good for budget eating, while for higher quality eating you should go to Zamalek, Mohandiseen or any other more affluent parts of town. Be aware that the food you are served, even at the "best" restaurants, may not be up to the standard you had expected, ingredients are often low quality and some of the dishes questionable, but you can still find good places to eat, especially if you get them recommended from someone you trust.

The winter months from November to March is the best time to visit Cairo. Daytime temperatures generally stay below 25C, with nighttime lows around 10C. Spring from March to May is often also pleasant, but it gets very hot in summer, up to 38C or above and this combined with the city's terrible pollution makes it rather unpleasant to be in Cario, especially in the autumn. There is very little rainfall in Cairo so do not expect any rain while you visit.
