With a population of 4.1 million, it is the second largest city in Egypt and its largest seaport, serving about 80% of Egypt's imports and exports. It extends 32 kilometers (20 miles) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and is located 225 kilometers (140 miles) from Cairo. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was build in the third century BC, and was between 115 meters and 150 meters high. The lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but was damaged by earthquakes in 1303 and 1323 and newer restored. The site is now occupied by the Fort of Quit Bey. The library was destroyed by fire, but it is uncertain when that happened, most likely its contents were largely lost during the taking of the city by the Roman Emperor Aurelian (270-275).
