Most of the holiday resorts in Egypt are located on a long stretch of coast line refered to as the Red Sea Riviera. The Red Sea Riviera consists of resort cities lying an the western shore of the Gulf Aqaba and along the eastern shore of mainland Egypt south of the Gulf of Suez. Most of the Red Sea Riviera is a national Park, both under water and on land. Desert and marine life are protected by a numner of laws, and visitors not abiding to the regulations may be subject to heavy fines. Some of the holiday resorts are located on the Sinai Peninsula, but most of them are to be found on the Eastern shore of mainland Egypt. Among the best known resorts on the Sinai Peninsular are: Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Taba and Nuweiba. Sham el-Sheikh's position as a major destination for foreign and domestic tourism is owing to its dramatic land scapes, year round dry and temperate climate and long stretches of natural beaches. Its waters are clear and calm for most of the year and have become popular for various watersports, particularly scuba diving and snorkeling, wich some consider to be among the best in the world. Coral reefs and spectacular under water and marine life makes an ideal setting for divers. Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport is the second busiest airport in Egypt and is well served by domestic and international scheduled services, but primarely by charter flights to Europe. The other resorts on the Sinai Peninsula are smaller, but offers more or less the same as Sharm el-Sheikh and are also served by Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. Among the best known holiday resorts on the Eastern shores of mainland Egypt are: Hurghada, El-Gouna, Marsa Alam, Sahl Hashees Bay and Soma Bay, but there are others, some still under construction. Hurghada stretches for about a 36 kilometers long seashore, and it does not reach far into the surrounding desert. The resort is a destination for Egyptian tourists as well as package holiday tourists from Europe. Until a few years ago Hurghada was a small fishing vilage, but today it counts 248,000 inhabitants. Hurghada is known for its watersports activities, nightlife and warm weather. The city is served by the Hurghada International Airport, with scheduled passenger traffic to and from Cairo and direct connections with several cities in Europe.
